Charlie Gelbert was a former shortstop who appeared in two World Series but only one won with the St Louis Cardinals in 1931. He was shot in the left leg during a hunting accident in 1932, when he slipped on a rock and his own shotgun went off. He underwent multiple surgeries and missed all of the 1933 season.
