NFL Recap Week 5 2016:

Cardinals 33-21 over the 49ers: In a Thursday night interdivision matchup the Cardinals won after losing to the Rams but this time whole handedly on both sides of the ball. 1. In place of concussed QB Carson Palmer, Drew Stanton threw two TD passes to WR Larry Fitzgerald. And again RB David Johnson showed up and he had two rushing TDS. 2. The defense had 6.5 sacks and two interceptions and a safety. 3. Only good thing for the 49ers was that RB Carlos Hyde had another TD and WR Jeremy Kerley had over 100 yards and 1 TD.

Patriots 33-13 over the Browns: In Tom Brady’s return from suspension New England dominated the lowly Browns. 1. After being shutout Brady put up 400+ yards and 3 TD passes all of them going to TE Martellus Bennett. RB LeGarrette Blunt scored another rushing TD to go with a field goal and safety. 2. Which brings me to this- the Patriots defense also showed up with that safety with an interception and fumble while knocking out the starting QB Cody Kessler, this made them use WR Terrelle Pryor till journeyman Charlie Whitehurst came in. They also shut down Isaiah Crowell after his big game last week.

Lions 24-23 over the Eagles: The Lions ended the honeymoon for the Eagles who were 3-0 before their bye week. 1. Philadelphia’s defense hadn’t given up a passing touchdown, a point in the first quarter or allowed offenses to combine to score three TDs through three games until the Lions’ QB Matthew Stafford threw three TD passes to RB Theo Riddick who caught two, with WR Marvin Jones catching the other. 2. QB Carson Wentz didn’t look as sharp as he was in his first three games this time only throwing for 200+ yards with 2 TDS but one interception. 3. The Lions defense showed up with two forced fumbles with that one interception by Wentz being the deciding factor after a go ahead field goal by Detroit’s Matt Prater.

Colts 29-23 over the Bears: The Colts beat the Bears for the 1st time at home. 1. Andrew Luck again had to win the game for his team with a go ahead TD pass to WR TY Hilton. He finished with over 300 yards and 2 TDS with the other one going to TE Dwayne Allen. Hilton added over 100 yards as well. 2. Brian Hoyer was solid with more than 350 yards and 2 TDs of his own. Jordan Howard was the real star for the Bears again with over 160 all purpose yards to go with the TD. 3. The ageless wonder in kicker Adam Vinatieri kicked five field goals, two 50+ yards, two 40+ yards, and one chip shot of 20+ yards. 4. The Colts defense showed up as they had 3 forced fumbles. 5. WR Cameron Meredith showed up out of nowhere with over 100 yards and a TD for Chicago.

Titans 30-17 over the Dolphins: 1. After a bad performance last week QB Marcus Mariota looked way better. He had 3 TDS one going to TE Delanie Walker and he had one rushing TD. 2. RB DeMarco Murray didn’t score but had over 100 yards for the 2nd time this year. 3. The Titans defense had 6 sacks and two interceptions. So Miami couldn’t score or keep the other team from scoring. 4. The only bright spot was a punt return TD and RB Jay Ajayi filling in for Arian Foster, had a TD. 5. WR Andre Johnson showing he isn’t ready to retire yet had his 2nd TD of the season.

Redskins 16-10 over the Ravens: 1. Washington won for the third straight game and won because of Jamison Crower’s punt return TD. 2. It was a sloppy game with missed points after attempts and fumbles. 3. The game wasn’t decided until the final minute, when an apparent touchdown catch by WR Breshad Perriman was overturned by replay. Perriman got his right foot down in the end zone, but his left foot was out of bounds.

Vikings 31-13 over the Texans: 1. Well the Vikings defense showed why it’s the best: they shutdown RB Lamar Miller who’s having a good season to only 20 yards. They sacked QB Brock Osweiler four times and picked him off once. They also denied Houston 12 of 13 third downs while holding WR Will Fuller to 4 yards. 2. The offense looked good again as QB Sam Bradford didn’t throw a pick and two TD passes one going to WR Cordarrelle Patterson and the other to WR Adam Thielen, who also had over 100 yards. RB Matt Asiata scored for the 2nd straight week. 3. The only bright spot for the Texans was WR DeAndre Hopkins scoring a TD.

Steelers 31-13 over the Jets: The Steelers blew out another team with a supposed good defense. 1. QB Ben Roethlisberger had over 300 yards and 4 TD passes two to WR Sammie Coates who also had over 100 yards and the other two TDs to WR Antonio Brown and TE Jesse James, his second consecutive week with a TD. RB Le’Veon Bell had over 150 all purpose yards. 2. The only positive thing for the Jets was QB Ryan Fitzpatrick didn’t throw the ball away and threw one TD pass to WR Brandon Marshall.

Falcons 23-16 over the Broncos: The upset of the week. The vaunted defense of the Broncos let the Falcons running back combo run all over them. 1. Devonta Freeman had over 100 all purpose yards with 1 TD, while Tevin Coleman had over 160 yards and 1 TD. 2. It was mostly a field goal game for both sides outside those RB TDS and Demaryius Thomas TD. 3. The defense for Atlanta showed up with 3 forced fumbles and 1 interception. 4. With rookie QB Paxton Lynch the Broncos weren’t able to sustain enough of an offense to come back for the high scoring Falcons. The only good thing-their defense shut down WR Julio Jones coming off a 300 yard game holding him to 29.

Cowboys 28-14 over the Bengals: 1. It was the all rookie show as QB Dak Prescott threw for 1 TD and ran one in while RB Ezekiel Elliot had 130+ yards and 2 TDS. He became the first Dallas rookie with three consecutive 100 yard rushing games. 2. Of course, the reasons the Bengals lost was because of the defense letting Dallas run all over them. 2. The lone bright spot was WR Brandon LaFell who had 2 TDs.

Bills 30-19 over the Rams: The Bills have been on fire since looking inept to start the season with bad losses, they have beaten three tough defenses in the Patriots, Cardinals, and now the Rams. 1. QB Tyrod Taylor had 2 Passes and RB Lesean McCoy had 150 yards rushing while fellow RB Mike Gillislee had the other rushing TD. 2. The defense showed up with DB Nickell Robey-Coleman who had two interceptions and took one back for a TD while the rest of the defense had two forced fumbles. 3. The lone bright spot for the Rams was RB Todd Gurley who had the team’s only TD.

Raiders 34-31 over the Chargers: In a close divisional game the QB Derrick Carr pulled his team out of it with a victory. 1. Carr had over 300 yards and threw 2 TD passes, one to WRS Michael Crabtree and Amari Cooper who also had over 100 yards receiving. The FB Jamize Olawale scored the other TD for Okland.2. QB Phillip Rivers had to carry his team again, this time he had 4 TD passes and over 350 yards. River’s two WRS Tyrell Williams had over 100 yards to go with the TD and while Travis Benjamin had over 100 yards. His TE’S each caught a TD pass, Antonio Gates and Hunter Henry and RB Melvin Gordon caught the other one. 3. The Raiders defense at least showed up when it counted with two interceptions and 3 forced fumbles.

Packers 23-16 over the Giants: 1. Even with an uneven game from QB Aaron Rodgers who had 2 TD passes but two interceptions, they held on to win. Outside of those 2 TDS it was kicker Mason Crosby who would do most of the scoring with 3 field goals. 2. The Packers defense did its job by holding QB Eli Manning to under 200 yards, outside of the late TD by WR Odell Beckham Jr. it was all field goals by Josh Brown.

Buccaneers 17-14 over the Panthers: In a closely contested divisional game without QB Cam Newton out with a concussion, it was a field goal game. 1. It was Cameron Artis-Payne who stole the show with 2 Rushing TDs while TE Greg Olsen had 181 yards despite fill in QB Derek Anderson having 2 interceptions which could be the reason they lost-not enough offense. 2. RB Jacquizz Rodgers, the third string RB filling for Doug Martina and Charles Simms had over 100 yards, while QB Jameis Winston didn’t turn over the ball throwing one TD pass to WR Mike Evans. 3. Rookie kicker Roberto Aguayo hit the go ahead field goal after missing two in the game. He is famous for not missing a field goal in college and being taken in the second round.
