Athlete amongst You:

Not everyone will pursue what they’re the best at some may decide that even though they are good at something they rather do what they love. Many students here at Columbia College Chicago which is a liberal arts school are studying all sorts of things, but some decided they rather study what they really love and not pursue being a professional athlete well at least collegiate athlete.

Jessica Scott, 33, is originally from Connecticut but has been in living in Chicago for 11 years.  She played softball, basketball, volleyball, badminton, and did track in high school. What you wouldn’t believe is that Scott is the Connecticut junior Olympic doubles champion. But the irony for her is she came in 2nd to her partner for singles.

She loves watching basketball and her favorite player was Shaq. She also keeps up a sports blog about the WNBA and her favorite player Cappie Pondexter.

She did think about playing volleyball in college but the coach was really mean and she didn’t want that experience to ruin her college experience. But she said she knows she would make it because she said she was very good at volleyball.

She is still playing volleyball at the intramural level for the past couple of years. Currently she’s going to play here at Columbia College Chicago’s open court for volleyball.

So next time you’re walking around the hallways here or in classes with your fellow students don’t assume that most of the people that go here are into arts or fashion or music only. Lots of people in this world love watching or playing sports and some people could have been really good at the sport, but their real passions took precedence over what they were good at.

Look at what Jessica did. She picked getting a good education and having a good college experience instead of trying to be play sports in college and in the end being a professional athlete in volleyball or badminton. She currently is following her passion in journalism and still getting in some pickup games for fun.
